What is an IFSC code, and how do you read one?

Every time you send money via NEFT, RTGS or IMPS in India, you need an IFSC code. It's the piece of information that tells the banking network exactly which branch to route your money to — out of roughly 1.5 lakh bank branches across the country.

What IFSC stands for

IFSC is short for Indian Financial System Code — an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India to every bank branch that participates in electronic fund transfers.

How to read the 11 characters

Take an example: HDFC0001234

IFSC vs MICR vs SWIFT

IFSC is for domestic electronic transfers. MICR is a separate 9-digit code printed on cheques for physical clearing. SWIFT is used only for international wire transfers.

Where to find your IFSC code

It's printed on the first page of your bank passbook and on every cheque leaf. Or search your bank and branch on our IFSC finder.
