DIGIPIN explained: India's new digital address

In May 2025, India Post quietly launched something that could eventually matter more than the pincode you've used your whole life: DIGIPIN, a 10-character digital address precise enough to identify a single doorway.

The problem it solves

A pincode covers a broad area — sometimes thousands of addresses. That's fine for sorting mail at scale, but useless for a delivery rider trying to find one specific gate in a neighbourhood with no formal street numbering, or an ambulance trying to reach an exact location during an emergency.

How it works

DIGIPIN divides the whole of India into a grid, then subdivides that grid 10 times, each time into 16 smaller pieces (a 4×4 split). After 10 rounds of subdivision, what's left is a single cell roughly 4 metres by 4 metres — small enough to be one specific spot. Each of those 10 subdivision choices becomes one character in the final code.

Built by India Post with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre, the whole system is open-source — anyone can implement the same algorithm and get identical results.

Does it replace pincodes?

No. DIGIPIN is designed to work alongside the existing 6-digit pincode system, not instead of it. Think of pincode as the neighbourhood and DIGIPIN as the exact doorstep within it.
