Head Post Office, Sub Post Office, and Branch Post Office: What's the Difference

If you've searched a pincode on this site and seen multiple office names returned — some labeled HO, others SO or BO — you've run into India Post's three-tier office hierarchy. Understanding it clarifies why a single 6-digit pincode can serve several physically different post offices at once.

Head Office (HO)

A Head Office is the main administrative post office for a district or postal division. It typically handles the highest volume of mail processing, oversees the Sub Offices and Branch Offices reporting to it, and is usually located in the district's primary town or city center. When you see "G.P.O." (General Post Office) attached to a major city's name, that's typically its Head Office.

Sub Office (SO)

A Sub Office reports administratively to a Head Office and serves a smaller, more localized area — often a specific neighborhood, suburb, or smaller town within the district. Sub Offices handle the same range of services as a Head Office (delivery, counter transactions, savings schemes) but at a smaller scale, and multiple Sub Offices commonly exist under one Head Office's jurisdiction.

Branch Office (BO)

A Branch Office is the smallest unit in the hierarchy, typically found in rural areas or smaller settlements, and reports to a Sub Office rather than directly to a Head Office. Branch Offices often operate with more limited hours and staff, focusing primarily on basic delivery and counter services for a compact local area.

Why this matters for finding your correct pincode

Because a single pincode frequently spans an HO plus several SOs and BOs, searching by exact office name matters more than searching by pincode alone if you're trying to confirm which specific office actually delivers to your address. Our pincode finder lists every office under a pincode together, precisely so you can identify the right one rather than assuming the first result is the correct match.

Does the HO/SO/BO distinction affect delivery speed?

Not directly — delivery speed depends more on the specific route and staffing of the office actually assigned to your address than on its tier in the hierarchy. A well-staffed Branch Office in a dense area can deliver just as reliably as a Sub Office elsewhere; the hierarchy is primarily an administrative structure, not a service-quality indicator.
